The Raisin Exercise for Mindfulness

Hello meditators and wellness practitioners!

I am pleased to let you know that this Thursday, 5th October 2023, I’ll introduce a new mindfulness meditation practice, the Raisin Exercise at the Soul Spa in Bath city centre.

You may well agree with me that it’s very easy to get caught up in life and forget to pay attention to what we’re actually doing. The raisin exercise for mindfulness, also known as the raisin meditation, allows us to pause, feel and cherish everyday activities, like eating, which we sometimes do on autopilot.

As the title suggests, this mindfulness practice involves eating a single raisin along with the application of all of our senses. We will put aside all distractions, relax with a body scan and grounding before we begin the exercise. We will engage all of the senses: touch, taste, smell, sight and sound during the Raisin Exercise and then reflect on how we feel.

Mindfulness teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn is credited with creating the raisin mindfulness meditation as a simple way to help people slow down and pay attention to the present moment. He is considered to be one of the pioneers of mindfulness in the West and his Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program (MBSR) first developed in 1979 includes the Raisin Meditation.

It sounds simple; but this exercise challenges us to focus on the present moment and appreciate the small things in life. The lessons that we learn through this exercise are applicable to other everyday activities, so worth having a go!

I do hope you can make it to our first Raisin Exercise for Mindfulness session on Thursday 5th October. We meet at 6.20 for a 6.30pm start at The Soul Spa.

I’m looking forward to meditating with you!
