Wednesday 21st June is Yoga Day. Yogis across the world will practice 108 sun salutations and chant mantras 108 times as part of the celebrations in an effort to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.
In fact, the UN is planning a yoga session led by H.E. Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, at UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday 21st June.
Prime Minister Modi said: “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action … a holistic approach [that] is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.”
But yoga is more than a physical activity, says the UN. In the words of one of its most famous practitioners, the late B. K. S. Iyengar, “Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions.”
So how will you celebrate yours?
I will be sure to fit in a few salutations myself in between classes. With the amazing weather we have in the UK, nothing beats salutations in the sun!
P.S. I was very much looking forward to celebrating with likeminded people on Sunday 18 June with 18 sun salutations (or as many as we could) but due to a combination of reasons, the event had to be cancelled. Apologies if you were enquiring or planning to join. You can always come to my next yoga workshop in the Autumn! There’s always something to look forward to.
